Integrated Medical Education – Faculty Position

 

Ross University School of Medicine, located on the beautiful Caribbean island of Dominica in the West Indies, invites applications for a faculty post at any rank in the Integrated Medical Education department. Our mission is to prepare highly dedicated students to become effective, successful physicians in the United States. Basic science coursework is taught in Dominica and students then complete their clinical studies in the United States. Education is the primary focus of the faculty.  The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester.  Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year.  Effective teachers are sought, particularly individuals who are interested in improving medical education and who work well on a team. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This faculty position includes teaching Integrated Medical Education to 1st and 2nd year medical students. This department includes Problem based learning (PBL) simulation and integrated the ACGME competencies into the curriculum. Applicants from the United States must be either Board Eligible or Board Certified. If Board Eligible he/she must have completed training no more than 2 years prior. All applicants must have an interest in relating clinical medicine and basic sciences.

 

This post may be of greatest interests to those who have recently completed residencies and newly Board certified doctors who are looking for an opportunity to teach to a North American standard & to experience practicing medicine in a developing country.

 

The course is composed of didactic lectures, problem based learning and use of human simulators and task trainers throughout the 1st 4 semesters and is evaluated by means of multiple choice questions, portfolio reviews and preceptor and peer evaluation in small group activities. Functions therefore include:

 

  • Making presentations to medical students using active learning on use of the AGCME (SPIRIT) competencies in patient care including lectures, team based learning, and small group activities
  • Facilitating problem-based learning sessions after appropriate training
  • Facilitation simulation activities using manikins and task trainers after appropriate training
  • The preparation of course material (handouts etc.).
  • The preparation and administration of multiple choice questions
  • Evaluations of student reflections or portfolios on activities to show improvement in practice ( including self care and study skills)
  • Prepare instructional plans and career analyses to reflect current changes in the field
  • Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel
  • Develop new instructional materials and teaching techniques with participation in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum planning
  • Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence
  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected, and confer with advisory groups in order to modify course content
  • Participate in other activities as assigned by the department chair or executive dean

 

Qualifications:

  • Content expertise to teach principles of clinical medicine
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Strong teaching skills and experience or evidence of potential.
  • Experience in computer-assisted delivery of course content.
  • Interest in medical education
  • Desire for self improvement
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team.

 

Qualified candidates will include internists, surgeons & sub specialists, family practitioners or pediatricians eligible to practice in the United States, or Canada with prior practice experience.
