In conjunction with a new project funded by the National Institutes for Health, the Department of Medical Education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has a 12-month position for a research associate. The NIH project funding the position involves studying the language characteristics in documenting clinical encounters in order to inform the development of an enhanced electronic health record.  The linguistic analysis and computer science aspects of the project will be conducted by collaborators at the University of Memphis.  The work at SIU will focus on the application of the work to clinical medicine.  This position offers an ideal opportunity for a new PhD to begin to establish an independent research program prior to beginning an academic career. Southern Illinois University is an internationally-recognized center for research in performance-based assessment and is well-endowed for conducting research in medical education. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in communication studies, language pragmatics, linguistic anthropology, psychology, sociology, nursing or another related field.

 

Desired Qualifications:  Knowledge and experience in medical education, competency-assessment, healthcare, nursing, and/or medical communication would be very helpful.  Experience with research projects involving human subjects is highly desirable.
