Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education

Faculty Researcher ~ Full-time
The Departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics, their Postgraduate Program, and the Program for Educational Research and Development at McMaster University invite applications
for a faculty position in medical education research at the Assistant or Associate Professor level (dependent on qualifications) to begin on or before July 1, 2010. Initial contract 3 years; may
be renewed and extended.
The specific goals of this position are:
1. To develop and promote educational research within the postgraduate medical education residency programs in Medicine and Pediatrics at McMaster University.
2. To facilitate resident and faculty participation in postgraduate medical education research and the development of academic careers in medical education.
3. To promote and develop collaborative educational tools and innovation in our residency programs.
4. To collaborate provincially and nationally with other universities.
The rationale for such an individual derives from the recognition that there are a number of individual clinical faculty in postgraduate education who are keenly interested in doing research
in education, but who have very little time to devote to such research, are generally unfamiliar with the literature in educational research (a prerequisite for successful publication), and
frequently lack sufficient technical skill to see all aspects of the research endeavour to completion.
You will have primary responsibility for stimulating and conducting educational research in postgraduate education in these departments and will be expected to be available to clinician
educators who need consultation and support in initiating research ideas. You will act proactively to stimulate research by a number of mechanisms such as workshops on research methods,
grant writing, poster days, regularly scheduled consultation times, active participation as co-investigator with input to grant writing, data gathering, analysis and publication. In addition, you
will fulfill obligations as a faculty member by maintaining an active research program including research grants, publications, etc. and will have the usual responsibility for teaching which
may involve clinical fellows or graduate students.
Based in the Program for Educational Research and Development, you will be mentored by the Assistant Dean, PERD, but will be directly accountable to the Postgraduate Medical Education
Research Committee and to the departments.
You have a Ph.D. in social, health, or behavioural sciences with a strong background in quantitative methodology, research design, and statistics.
Experience in health care and familiarity with medicine is highly desirable. As one major activity of the position is consultation with faculty about
research, demonstrated competence in conducting research consultations is highly desirable.
Salary range: $80,000 - $100,000
