ECFMG International Fellows (Gwendie Camp)
Gwendie Camp urged SDRME member institutions to host ECFMG medical education fellows. These fellows visit medical schools in the United States for a period of 3 months to one year to gain skills/knowledge in medical education. They receive a living stipend from the ECFMG. The host institution helps find a place to live, supplies office space, computer, etc. No funding is given to the host institution. This has been a positive experience according to several SDRME members who have hosted these fellows.

Plenary: Reflections on Medical Education, "Who Cares?"
Jim Erdmann, Ph.D., Jefferson University Medical School
Dr. Erdmann reflected on the role of medical educators and medical education units. He supported the educators' role as "indispensable" to the institutions by performing important service functions. He also urged medical educators and their units to ask important questions about educational process and content, e.g., PBL, student assessment, and seek answers to those questions through research. The discussion that followed touched on: the role/contribution/impact of faculty and student outcomes; compromises between service delivery and research priorities.
Plenary: "Publishing Medical Education Research"
Addeane Calleigh, Academic Medicine
Addeane Callleigh compared characteristics of Journal of Medical Education with its successor, Academic Medicine. She noted that Academic Medicine responded to AAMC priorities for page allocation to various areas. She added the AAMC had demonstrated their commitment to research and a broad perspective on medical education with some new features (In Progress, Ideas for Medical Education, Information Resources). She also described some new activities in the works (an approved position for a review manager at the Journal; consideration of a review advisory board). She discussed the possibility of more funding for research pages in the journal and noted that the current President of AAMC recognizes the value of research and that important current questions are well suited to social/behavioral science research.
Closing Plenary
Emil Petrusa (incoming RIME director) suggested some possible areas of involvement for SDRME:
Other sessions consisted of small group discussions/workshops and posters. These are described in the Annual Meeting agenda.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sharon Krackov, Secretary
